I finished up my last project from the Metal Discovery Workshop, an altered Altoids tin, with a shrine to yard statues titled “Grass Menagerie”. I got the idea from a spread in a stock photo book where the line “Gnomes were just the beginning” created a spark along with a small plastic deer (reindeer actually) that sat on my “Hutch of Inspiration” awaiting its fate. The wee house on the front of the tin was from a session practicing my cutting skills – with metal shears this isn’t as easy as one might think!
I thoroughly enjoyed this experience and might just have to do another. It truly helped my metal skills along with presenting aesthetic challenges along the way – What is this project trying to teach me? and How can I adapt it to create something I will use in a future endeavour? – and finally, it reminded me that it is ALWAYS about the process NOT the end product, something we artists often have to relearn again and again!
You can view the entire project’s worth of finished works here.
