Firstly, apologies for the delay in posting this week’s Art Challenge – family stuff. ‘Nuff said.
But I think you’ll have fun with this week’s challenge:
WEEKLY CHALLENGE #5
The Challenge: Grab a glossy magazine – fashiony types work REALLY well for this but any glossy magazine will do. Choose an image from the magazine and rip’er out [hint: the bigger the image the easier this will be for you].
Outline all the major portions of the image using a marking pen – Sharpie’s are my favourites. You can be as detailed or as abstract as you like. Then using white gesso paint within your marked lines… think paint-by-number.
Now this is where you can have fun. You can white out EVERYTHING, per my image below OR you can be discriminating and leave some portions gesso-free or graduate your gesso. Just have fun with it.
This is a great exercise in seeing composition in an entirely different light. If you want to further challenge yourself, use your modified image in another project (thinking out loud here: collage, painting, ATC etc.)
Post’em: Post a link to your gesso’d image in the comments below. I’ll do a draw of all the participants and they’ll receive my finished project in the mail. We’re all about the win-win situation round here.
Due: Post by Friday, February 8, 2008 (12:00pm AST) to be qualified for the draw.

I am so late doing this, but it was really fun! Thanks for posting these challenges.

I am new to the challenges and posted #5 here, http://codyland.blogspot.com/ it was a great deal of fun.
I loved this challenge because it combined two of my favourite art tools: gesso and black marker. It’s addictive!

I have been really enjoying the challenges . . . and am finally making time to participate this week! And I mixed it up with another challenge from another blog, and really enjoyed the effect. Thanks for the inspiration – and the deadlines.

Check it out: http://www.ronnas.blogspot.com
looks like a great idea! AND I will totally get some kids at school to do this too… this week’s challenge for my students is “MASKS” and I think this can fit in its own way… plus I just got a huge donation of people magazines and I think this will be just the right type of magazine for it. just wish my studio wasn’t so cold right now or I would fish through some I have up there….. well… I have to get up there eventually, so we shall see!
