Challenge #15

MONTHLY CHALLENGE #3

The Elements - Fire Wind Water Earth Air

I’ve always loved creating series. I’m not sure why exactly but they seem to hold more power for me. Maybe it’s because I’m able to work on multiple ideas while keeping them contained within one conceptual framework. Maybe it’s because I need the discipline of even self-prescribed  "rules". Maybe I just like seeing 3 or 5 or 7 things in a row. (Always ALWAYS work in odd numbers folks. An old design rule that still holds water today!) So. Here’s this month’s challenge, piggybacking on last month’s book work-through.

The Challenge:  Using your newly acquired mad skillz from last month’s challenge create a series of 5 objets (the medium is YOUR choice) pertaining to the 5 elements: Fire - Wind - Water - Earth - Air.

Post’em:  Post these as you finish them OR as an entire group once done. Again the choice is your’s. (But remember we all love evolving eye candy!)  Use our Flickr group if you don’t have a place to post photos.

Due:  You have the whole month of July.

I really like your theme this month. Very open :). Maybe i’ll photoshop photos? That could be fun. Don’t know yet.

So, just out of curiosity, I know that on previous challenges you declared a ‘winner’ from the challenge. I totally think all of us who participated ‘won’, from the fabulous projects we all created. I’m just wondering if you are going to be declaring one of the fabulous artists a ‘winner’ of the monthly challenge? Or is that what the talk of a giveaway was about?

Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy !! This sounds terrific ! Actually I’m going to use techniques from another book, well maybe also from the one I just went through, or…..who knows! What fun!!!

In response to Dale’s enquiry about “winners”… I haven’t declared any for the monthly challenges for a couple of reasons.

    1. Postage was getting to be rather expensive and because of that I started limiting what the challenges were based on how cheap it would be to send. And that really wasn’t the spirit of my intention for these challenges.

    2. I began to worry that participants were holding some merit up to whether they “won” or not even if it was only a random number generated by a computer javascript. Again, not my original intention.

I don’t begrudge giving away my stuff, after all, who doesn’t like getting a gift in the mail?!? But I need to find a better way of doing it. Any ideas??

oooohhhhh! I likie! I will keep doing my book but now add this theme. My other idea for a series wasn’t coming out the way I liked so this will be perfect. That is if I can do art amoungst the training.

I hope this doesn’t post twice. I commented, hit submit and got the message “can’t find webpage”. Okay, at the risk of being duplicative: I love the series work you do. I too love odd numbers. Seven is my favorite number, I also love the number three and oddly, (no pun intended) the number 13. I think working in series brings a certain completeness or wholeness to the works. Rather like rounding them out. They hang well together and show better too in my opinion anyway. I think, as for sending the winning items, you should open a store on Etsy, put the item as a reserve item for the winner, add a link here for the winner to follow and simply have the winner pay the postage. :)) It sounds like a lot of work but it would be more simple in practice. It would also promote Etsy. Okay, you can probably see right through me. Yes, I would love for you to have an Etsy store. Where people (too shy or too poor to approach the gallery where you sell you works) could possibly afford some of your work - even if it were only practice jewelry. :) I have got to be one of your biggest fans.

Not sure how I managed to arrive here today, maybe Michaels blog, but I love your website, love your work and truly enjoyed reading the “about” part of you.

I am thrilled that someone has thought to have art workshops in Nova Scotia!!

    I shall return.

I am trying to do some research for this… and I only seem to find 4 elements as the common combo with air/wind as the same one… do you have any research links that you used for inspiration that shows/discusses the 5 different ones?
