Sea Angel - Barbie Redux
It took me a long time and many, many washes to get her face just right. That “Barbie” look does NOT want to leave easily. I underlaid with some golds – bright and cheapo shimmer craft paint – to give a bit of iridescence which certainly doesn’t come through in the photo and very subtly in RL.
And she kept staring at me blankly. I knew I needed something for her face/eye. I tried mirror and bead and coin and glass but I then stumbled on these stud-type things. Perfect size. Perfect shape. A swash of paint or two, to really build foundation and Voila! Perfect.
I’m pretty pleased with how she turned out and now she’ll be heading to the West Coast for the Barbie Redux show at the Ten Women Gallery.

Jen, It was good to hear from you. I’d say with your Barbie Redux your have captured a glimpse through the veil, a notion supported by other comments and other works. Your note made me smile and give thanks all around. Those carny barkers knew there was an allure well beyond the plastic, fur and feathers of their glittering prizes, else why would they hold so much meaning for us today? I take inspiration from your art and your ironman training.

she is super fab, her gold eye is particularly enchanting to me, but the whole organic, creature like appearance truely transformed Barbie into a work of art!

I simply love it. She is amazing. That gaze. Is that a tooth in her midsection? Cool.
