My friend and artiste extraordinaire, Tricia Anders, is curating a show at her Ten Women Gallery, called Barbie Redux, featuring altered Barbies. It was a thrill for me in my current non-art phase to already have a couple to share. And then I walked into my studio a couple of weeks ago and remembered I’d prepped some others. I was actually BACK in the studio today … I know. Be still thy beating heart, eh?!? … and did some more work on one. Tentatively she’s called “Sea Angel”.

Work-in-Progress: Sea Angel
What’s kinda cool about this angel is her “tail”, a piece of sun bleached bone.
Or shell.
I’m not really sure.
I’m pretty sure it’s either a lobster claw or a twisted jaw bone. (read: not a CLUE!)
Anyway.
I’d created the “angel” part before Christmas and when I saw this piece of detritus I knew it’d fit.
And it did. With a squeeze or two of Dap.
This is only the first coat of wash (mars black/quin gold) and has a long way to go.
But I love that *swoosh* form!
I'm loving this "Barbie"! Did this really start out as an actual Barbie or another? The face does not look like Barbie's but then, she has gotten older, right??? Isn't she 40 now? She should be showing her age!!! LOL—-I bet it feels really great to be inspired again and out in your studio working. I am planning on doing exactly just that SOON. It's been WAY too long for me. I am just trying to do what I can that still FEELS like art, even if it is just photographing stuff and writing. After all, those are art too, right?
Teri it is a "Barbie". I think the photo is distorting the light around her face giving her an odd look. Which is fine by me! lol
Of course photography and writing are Art! Keep up the good work!
I love how seamlessly the pieces blend together.
I know! It was a perfect fit. I love when that happens!
Hi Jen,
I started reading your blog a little while ago (found you through your collab with Seth), and I love your work. These altered barbies are way cool!
Evangeline, thanks so much for visiting and for your kind words!
oh, jen, she is beautiful. sublime.
Thanks Bri! She's still not done yet. But I like how she's progressing!
Facinating! So far from Barbie. Maybe the anti-Barbie! Can't way to see where you take her next.
I think of the FemBots as "anti-Barbie" … this one not so much but hey! she isn't finished yet so who knows?!?
wow, she is bone barbie..good to see the bone stash is coming out to play.
It's a pretty cool piece for sure. I love that it fit her perfectly. Symbiotic!
Oooh she's awesome! Makes me want to hunt out my old barbie doll and give her a little 'plastic surgery' makeover.
Do it! Do it! I'd love to see what you'd come up with! xoxo
simply stunning, Jen
Hey thanks nukke!
Very cool Jen!!
Thanks cat! Still a work-in-progress …
Wow. You always amaze me with the weirdly cool work you do!
Mary
"weirdly cool" works for me Mary! Thank you.
And she's not even finished yet! Wow!!! I'm sticking like glue to this story so I can see how she turns out. But I have to say I'm so in love with her already!!!
Thanks Kerin. She's all finished … http://www.jenworden.com/2009/06/02/sea-angel-fin…
I'd love to know what you think!
